Graduate Assistant/Tutor: The Haslam Scholars Program

The Haslam Scholars Program seeks to hire a one-half time (20 hours/week) Teaching Assistant/Tutor for the fall 2016 semester for a 200-level course required for all 1 st year Haslam Scholars.

Course Description:

Debates on contemporary issues in education are rooted in early western philosophy. For example, Plato’s The Republic is one of the earliest works to examine the role of education in a stratified society. Within the philosophy of education, classical and contemporary thinkers have devoted significant discourse to questions about liberal v. vocational education, education and enculturation, education for personal development v. education for citizenship. These ideas will be explored through course readings, discussion and reflection. Throughout the semester, we will examine a range of issues through theoretical and practice-oriented lenses that will deepen our understanding of teaching and learning. To this end, students will explore the following kinds of philosophical questions through the course content:

 What are the basic aims and ideals of the educational enterprise?

 What is the moral education and how does it differ from other kinds of education?

 How should a just and fair society aim to make us good students, good citizens, and good

persons?

 What kind of education is best suited to sustaining our democracy?

HSP 287 is a three-hour course, which meets university general education requirements for Arts and Humanities (AH) and Communicating through Writing (WC). This course is required of and limited to students in the Haslam Scholars Program.

The successful candidate must:

 Be a student enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

 Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

 Make reasonable progress towards their graduate degree program requirements

 Demonstrate time management skills to work on several projects simultaneously

 Have strong oral and written communication skills

Compensation:

 $6500 for one semester

 No additional benefits accrue with this position

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

 Provide assistance to course faculty

 Attend all class meetings and complete all readings carefully prior to the class meeting in which they are assigned

 Facilitate small group tutorials in which students are expected to discuss course readings and complete 2-3 1500-2000 word essays over the course of the semester. The essays should

undergo at least two revisions, which will be based on the feedback they receive from the tutor

and their own engagement with the reading.

 Attend training sessions at UT’s Writing Center and work closely with Writing Center faculty and staff to enhance editing skills

 Hold weekly office hours
